How long does a kitchen renovation take?
Dream kitchens take time, so to assist with your planning, it’s best to first get a rough idea of how long your project will take realistically and understand the moving parts involved.
Overall, the process can take anywhere from three to six months.
The length may come as a surprise, however a high level of attention to detail is required to ensure that you are getting exactly what you want, and that everything will fit your space.
Keep reading to learn about the journey from start to finish so you can start planning your own Farquhar renovation.
Planning: 2 weeks
Your planning can begin well in advance of starting the process, giving you ample time to figure out what look and function you’re after, and then making sure that is achievable within your budget.
These things will be discussed in your showroom consultation, where we gather information about your project and explore the finishes and products available. This gives your Farquhar designer an idea of what you’re looking for before they come out to your home to measure, usually within one to two weeks following your consultation.
Initial design & quote: 1-2 weeks
After your designer has attended your property and measured the space, your project moves into the initial design and quote stage which involves:
- Drawing of your plans
- Design presentation and quote
With Farquhar, you will be shown your new design in a dynamic 3D render to get a visual representation from all angles, giving you a clearer picture of what your dream space will look like.
When you’re happy to work with Farquhar, you will pay a deposit and be provided a copy of your drawings and design to take home and review in depth.
Next, a check measure of your space by your allocated Project Manager will occur to ensure that everything drawn will fit your space to the millimetre.
Project finalisation & sign off: 2+ weeks
This can either be the shortest or longest phase of your project, depending on how quickly you can make decisions.
It involves coming back into the Farquhar showroom to finalise your project design, where you’ll also confirm your selections. This includes cabinetry, benchtops, splashbacks, sink & tap, handles, accessories, and importantly, your large appliances.
Another key factor of your renovation to consider at this stage is whether you are planning to change the flooring, as this will impact measurements.
The sooner you are able to lock in your materials and products the better, as your kitchen cannot be detailed for manufacturing until all selections and appliances are documented. This is why starting early is key!
Manufacture & site preparation: 9-12 weeks
Once you have signed off on your manufacturing plans, your cabinetry will be custom built and detailed to your exact specifications in our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility here in Lonsdale, SA.
The time it takes to manufacture is determined by the size of your kitchen. Allow extra time for more laborious cabinetry finishes like 2-pac paint and timber veneer.
From here, you will be given your delivery date which will inform when rip-out of your old kitchen will happen and trades come in for the first fix. Learn more about our on site process.
During this time is a perfect opportunity to start organising other decor to tie the overall look together, such as feature lighting, bar stools, small appliances and other key styling pieces you wish to include.
Installation and trades: 3+ weeks
Now for the exciting part where your new kitchen starts to come to life!
Installation times can vary from project to project, however your new kitchen can be completed in as little as three weeks depending on the materials selected, especially for your benchtops and splashback. Solid materials such as Zenith, Dekton porcelain and natural stone are measured and cut to size after your cabinetry installation, and installed approximately 15 business days after the check measure has occurred. The same also applies for glass splashbacks, which are measured after your benchtops are installed.
Below is a guide to the timing of each step in the installation process.
- Installation of cabinets & laminate benchtops: 1 week
- Installation of solid surface benchtops & splashbacks: 2-3 weeks
- Installation of glass or tiled splashbacks: 3 weeks for glass, 1 week for tiles
- Plumbing & electrical 2nd fix: 1 week
